Processing of catalytic converter carriers (aluminium silicate)

The task of a catalyst is to accelerate or retard chemical reactions without undergoing a permanent chemical change itself. Numerous catalytic processes take place in plants, animals and humans. Another example of catalysts are the catalytic converters installed in motor vehicles to clean the exhaust gases before they enter the atmosphere.

Because of its excellent thermal shock resistance, low thermal expansion and thermal conduction, aluminium oxide or aluminium silicate is used for the carriers (honeycomb housing) of the catalytic converters installed in the exhaust gas cleaning system of internal combustion engines. The actual catalysts, i.e. the elements platinum, rhodium and palladium are then applied to the carrier of the catalytic converter.

In order to obtain compounds and products with excellent sintering properties that are ideal for compaction, the aluminium silicate or aluminium oxide must be processed in a contamination-free manner to an end-product fineness of < 15 µm.

 

Turboplex-Feinstsichter ATP

Alpine supplies the requisite processing systems for production of these catalytic converter carriers. With a Super Orion ball mill S.O. in combination with a Turboplex ultrafine classifier ATP, end products in the range d97 < 15 µm to d­97 < 200 µm can be produced with ease.

To guarantee contamination-free processing, the ball mill is lined with aluminium oxide and the grinding media are also made of aluminium oxide. All other product-contact system components are protected against wear by means of PU or aluminium oxide.
