Bentonite Processing

Bentonite is a valuable clay formed by the weathering of volcanic ash. It possesses swelling properties, can undergo ion exchange, and can become temporarily liquid under the influence of mechanical forces (thixotropic properties).

In its processed state, bentonite is used in many different branches of industry as well as in the field of agriculture. A few examples:

a) Building industry:
- as a sealant
- as a flushing agent and antiseize agent
- in special cements, etc.

b) Pharmaceuticals industry:
- as an additive for liniments, pastes and powders
- to bind poisons
- for cosmetic products, etc.

c) Foodstuffs industry:
- as a food supplement (e.g. E 558)
- as a carrier medium for colours
- to clarify fruit juices and wines, etc.

d) Ceramics industry:
- as a flow agent for ceramic compounds
- as an additive for glazes and enamel suspensions
- as a binder for moulding sand, etc.

e) Paper industry:
- as an adsorption agent and for separating undesirable products from the treatment water
- for special types of papers
- as an additive for processing waste paper, etc.

f) Agriculture:
- as a soil improver
- in fertiliser additives
- as an adsorbent for stables, etc.


For the above-mentioned applications, bentonite fineness values of between 97% < 63 µm and 97% < 20 µm are demanded.

The system schematic shows a system that fulfils the aforementioned requirements. The bentonite in this case has a high feed moisture of more than 15% H
2O. To enable trouble-free processing, the product needs to be dried down to less than 0.5% H2O. Our table roller mill AWM provides the possibility of drying the product at the same time as grinding and classifying it. To this end, the heated flow of air that is generated during processing is utilised. This is accomplished at a low energy consumption, because the heat generated by the mill, classifier and fan is used. This process makes it possible to save up to 25% of the normally required drying energy.
